Why we use Essential Oils in our Candles and not Fragrance Oils

Candles, in almost every home you will probably find a beautiful candle perfectly placed in the living space, bathroom or bedroom.  Candles are a much loved piece of home décor and to some, can complete the warming atmosphere in the room, and of course, come in a variety of scents!  But these scented candles could be causing your wellness harm.

Although we are focusing on the harmful culprit of fragrance oils in candles, there are a few contributing factors as to why many conventional 'scented candles' can cause harm to your health:

  • The Type of Wax
  • The Type of Wick
  • The Type of 'Fragrance' added for the Scent
  • Additional Additives

To touch base on these:

Many candles on the market are made using Paraffin Wax.  Paraffin is a petroleum waste product and when burned releases carcinogens chemicals, benzene and toluene, both highly toxic, as well as acrolein, acetone and acetaldehyde.  The soots/fumes from this are similar to that of second-hand cigarette smoke and can contribute to respiratory conditions.

Many wicks in candles contain a heavy metal as the core base.  These metals are usually lead, tin or zinc.  Research shows that burning candles with lead-core wicks can release high levels of toxic lead, which can cause lead poisoning.  Exposure to high amounts of lead could potentially be linked to hormone disruption, illness and health problems.

There are a variety of additives offered in candle making made up of chemicals and synthetic ingredients, additives such as synthetic colour dyes, scent throw enhancers, discolouration and colour fading preventer and colour enhancers, for just a few.

 And lastly,

Fragrance oil is a synthetic oil made up from petrochemicals to mimic the smell of indulgent scents.  Synthetic fragrance scents can range from pretty much any scent you can imagine:

  • Vanilla
  • Fruity - orange, watermelon, berry etc
  • Coconut Lime
  • Chocolate
  • Cupcake
  • Ocean
  • Fairy Floss
  • Frangipani
  • Chai
  • Christmas Pudding

The list is never ending!

Common chemicals found in artificial/synthetic fragrance oils are usually Petrochemicals, Solvents, Phthalates and Formaldehyde releasing Preservatives and Parabens.

Petrochemicals are a chemical products derived from petroleum, like that found in Paraffin Waxes.  These chemicals can cause allergic reactions, irritation to the skin and throat, headaches, dizziness and nausea.

Phthalates are found in many other cosmetic products as well as conventional candles.  The chemical Diethyl Phthalate (DEP), is widely used to make the scent in fragrance oils last longer.  DEP can be disguised on the products ingredient list as 'fragrance', so you may not even think it is being used in that product.  Phthalates are endocrine disruptors, interfering with hormones and hormone functions.

Parabens can also be hormone disruptors, used as preservatives in the product.  Solvents are also used in candles to increase the oils scent throw, and slow the candles burning time down, making the candle last longer.

So with all these factors to consider, it is clear to see why we do not use any fragrance oils in our candles, nor paraffin wax and we only use Pure High Quality Essential Oils to create a beautiful, harm-free aroma, sustainable GMO-free Soy Wax and lead/metal-free, cotton wicks.

It's time to think about what kind of candles you have in your home.
